Tour from Cartagena to San Basilio de Palenque and discover the lifestyle of the first free town in America, a Unesco World Heritage site.

The best way to enjoy Palenque is with a local guide who will show you the most authentic parts of their community, so that you do not forget a single detail about this local experience, as the true cultural value of a community is in the intangible; it is what you breathe while you walk down dirt roads alongside houses made from wood, cement and straw, and the inspiring stories that will subtly change the way you think about life.

Travel time to get to Palenque from Cartagena is about 90 minutes. Once there, our local Palenquero guide will welcome us and make us part of the community by introducing us to the pillars that define their people’s culture and how .

One of the pillars is their creole language, which we will hear spoken and sung by the majority of the older local residents. Another is music, which we will learn more about inside the home of local musicians surrounded by drums. Finally, the pillar which is less well known, and leaves us with the most questions is religion. The mix of religious beliefs and practices within the Palenque culture are very unique, such as celebrating death, mourning birth, and living each day as if it were a party.

On this day tour to San Basilio de Palenque, we will also visit the most iconic sights like the statue of the unique world boxing champion "Pambelé" borned in San Basilio, the central square, which proudly exhibits the statue of Bioho Benkos, founder of Palenque and precursor of the liberation of slaves in Cartagena and the house of culture.

We end our trip after lunch with a pleasant drive back to your hotel having learned about the contributions that Afro-Colombians made in the history of Cartagena.
